Gran Canaria - the island of contrasts

To be honest, I have to admit that I turned my nose up a bit when the topic of Gran Canaria came up. Like many other people, I only had mass tourism on the coasts in mind. How wrong I was!

But when I realized that the almond trees were blooming at the beginning of February, my enthusiasm was much greater and my photographer's heart beat faster. I wasn't disappointed.

Once away from the coast, I was enchanted by the first rolling green hills and the evening sun, which bathed the palm trees and eucalyptus trees in the most beautiful peach-colored light that one could only imagine. Our destination was Tejeda, the small village in the mountains, which has been named the most beautiful village in Spain several times. The main attraction of the place are certainly the many hundreds of almond trees, in whose honor the almond blossom festival is even held. The path took us over the plateau (approx. 1500m) and the highest point on the island, the “Cruz de Tejeda”. What revealed itself to us there, a few minutes after sunset, was simply breathtaking. The “Roque Nublo” and the “Roque Bentayga” are surrounded by mountain ranges in all shades of light. A true landscape dream!

Morning mood in Tejeda

The following days were characterized by beautiful landscapes with blooming almond trees, impressive mountains, dunes and a variety of plants that just amaze you.

Conclusion: the Canary Islands are definitely worth a trip and are so much more beautiful than I ever thought.

And the almond blossoms?

They are more understated beauties and perhaps not quite as spectacular as the cherry blossoms in Japan. What really impressed me, however, was that they can grow on barren ground and rocky outcrops, in the midst of cacti and agaves, and their magical and delicate beauty is shown to even greater advantage.
